During October 1989, Ensemble Edgard Varèse is founded in Parma, under Martino Traversa's direction. Ensemble's project is based on the necessity of promoting and spread new musical languages and aesthetics, with particular concern to that "no man's land" apparently represented by the convergence of art and technology.

As an homage to Edgard Varèse, an emblema of research in this field, the Ensemble features musicians, physicists, IT experts all concurring to the attainment of two objectives: analysis, research and study of modern and contemporary authors and the constitution of PROMETEO, a permanent laboratory of electro-acoustic ", a project warmly agreed to by Luigi Nono.

The Ensemble has promoted several musical festivals dedicated to Paul Hindemith, Edgard Varesè, Luigi Nono, Anton Webern, Sofia Gubaidulina, Pierre Boulez, Gerard Grisey, Olivier Messiaen; cycles of scientific seminaries at the University Department for Physics; it has moreover held the International Meeting of Modern and Contemporary Music "TRAIETTORIE" at Teatro Farnese and Teatro Regio in Parma.

The Ensemble's scientific research activities currently involves the realization of InterActionMachine, a complex system for real-time elaboration and spacialization of audio signals on a 32 channels-parametric matrix, based on SiliconGraphics systems.
